Breast cancer is a grouping of malignant cells that begin in the breast and eventually invade as well as spread to other parts of the body. It is first noticed – in most cases as a lump in the breast. A normal breast is comprised of milk glands, ducts and fatty tissues, as well as blood and lymphatic vessels. There are no lumps in a healthy breast. Breast cancer, if it is found in a breast can be spread via the lymph nodes. Most of the lumps, if found in the breast, are not cancerous but should still be looked at under a microscope. There are two basic types of breast cancer. Non-invasive – this begins in the milk ducts of the breast and does not spread to other nearby tissues. Now although they haven't spread to other tissues, it can develop into the second type of breast cancer.
Invasive breast cancer is the type of cancer that spreads to other tissues via the lymphatic system to other parts of the body. These abnormal cells can travel either in the early stages of the disease or in the later part. Stage VI breast cancer happens when the cancer has proliferation to other parts of the body (bone, brain, blood, etc.). Unfortunately, some women are at this dangerous stage when they first discover that they have the disease. In most cases, this type of breast cancer occurs years after a person has completed their treatment options. Various factors like the stage of the cancer, tumor, etc. affect the treatment options that are available as well as the prognosis. But before we get to any of this a diagnosis needs to be made and confirmed.
Breast cancer is first diagnosed when there is some type of abnormality found in the breast either from self-examination or from a periodic mammogram (every woman should have a yearly mammogram). Once there is a suspicion of the disease then further testing needs to be done in order to get an official diagnosis. Often times the waiting period is the hardest part for not only the woman but for the members of her family as well. Over the past 15 – 20 years, there have been advancements in the treatment of this disease. A confirmed diagnosis is by no means an automatic death sentence. At this stage, you need to find the will and the strength to fight. There are hundreds of organizations that are dedicated to helping women fight this disease and one of the ways they do this is via fund raising.
